Hmm.. what's our elevator pitch? It would go something like this: At Spirit Of Summer, we’re all about quality skincare that is kind to you and the Earth. There’s only one of you and only one planet we call home, so let’s treat both with love. That’s why we handcraft nutrient-rich, skin-loving, luxury products with organic, vegan, raw and sustainable ingredients that leave you with glowing, summer skin all year round. No artificial fragrances. No BS.
When and why did you start Spirit of Summer?
Like many people, I took up a hobby during the first UK lockdown: soap-making. The plan was to make handmade Christmas gifts for my friends and family and I have always been interested in making my own personal care and beauty products. Once I started, there was no stopping me! It was great fun and I got a lot of great feedback from others about my products so I decided to take a leap of faith and start my first business selling them.
What are your core brand principles?
When formulating our products and during our operation, we keep 3 things at the front of our minds:
All ingredients must be thoughtfully chosen, i.e. must have a positive effect on the end user and must be of high quality and sustainably farmed. Our practices must be ethical and sustainable, i.e. our packaging and supplies must be sustainably sourced and eco-friendly - all our packaging is plastic-free and biodegradable. We'd be nowhere without our communities so we donate one of our products to The Hygiene Bank for every three we sell to fight hygiene poverty in the UK and we donate 10% of our profits to supporting vulnerable families in Vietnam.
What have you found most challenging in running your own business?
As consumers, we can be very cautious of what products they put on their skin (as we should be) so we tend to stick to brands and products that are well known. This provides a challenge for a new brand, such as ourselves, as we're the new kid on the block. We need to build trust in our products and this can be a very slow process to begin with. That's why we are so grateful for all our customers for believing in us.
What have been your greatest "Yes!" moments so far?
When we got our first sale from a stranger! We've been lucky enough to have had great support from our family and friends but they can only buy so many products from you, so when we got our first order from a stranger, we were over the moon! This meant that someone who doesn't know us personally liked our product and decided they wanted to try it. It was such a great feeling!
What did you come to TDBC for?
We were planning a few new products, namely gift boxes and DIY Body Butter kits and came across The Dorset Box Company on Instagram. We love supporting local businesses and the folks at TDBC were just so lovely and their boxes were stunning! It was a no brainer for us to go with TDBC for our box needs.
How did we do?
Brilliant from start to finish! The team created beautiful custom gift boxes with gorgeous gold foiling of our logo so quickly and we couldn't be happier. We'll be launching our gift sets soon and I'm sure they'll be a hit with these boxes! We would not hesitate to recommend TDBC!
What are your plans for 2021?
We've got so many launches planned for 2021. As mentioned before, we've got our gift sets and DIY kits that feature TDBC's boxes, but we've also got shampoo bars on the way in February! Our sulphate-free, pH balanced shampoos have been a hit with our testers so we are so excited to share these with everyone.
